How do I start making a wax doll?
I would like to make a life size wax doll one day, like those in the manga "Vampire Doll" by Erika Kari, but I do not know much about how you do it! I do not know where you get wax or how to mold it, or paint it or attach hair or something. I understand that I should start small, but I want to know exactly * where * to start. Could someone please help me?
Casting wax, which is much stronger than stearic oil and wax, available at art supply and jewelry making sites. It actually comes in various hardnesses from carving to soft design. If there be a big wax object - and a person is great - it is usually to make it into pieces and "weld" the pieces together with a palette knife or spatula heated in an alcohol flame. The pieces can be formed by molding of flat panels produced by the liquid wax on the glass with edge strips to hold it in place or by melting on the water in a cake pan and lift it out as it becomes cool. Most of the techniques of slab building clay sculpture will work. For what you will do, you will need to learn the techniques of doll making.
